HEART SURGERY

You had me at Porcine

September 2, 2014

I will concede to the fact that I am somewhat morbidly fascinated with the procedure of having to have a pig’s heart valve inserted – and hang out for the rest of time – in the spot that my pulmonary valve hangs out in now.

“hey Pulmonary valve, sorry about that time you are shit and need to move on, oink”

It’s all just plain weird for me and I would venture to say that this is probably pretty super facking miserable for the pig.

I don’t eat meat – and haven’t for many, many years. The hilarious lack of true control we humans repeatedly pretend to have, is constantly thwarted by circumstances that are galaxies beyond our control. I made active choices as to what I wanted to ‘put’ into my body and how I wanted to be. The universe always has something to challenge us with. I don’t understand all the science but I have been told that when the implant has been processed and created that there is really no trace of the animals DNA it is simply ‘new’ tissue. Again, I think the pig might not fully concur.

The ethical issue is not something I can delve too deeply into, as the potential for variance in opinion and argument is much too vast. I just know that my human heart will eventually fail without this procedure and I cannot break it even more by constantly pondering the ethics of it all.

I am having a hard time finding any conclusive information or evidence of where these pig organs come from. If anyone has any info that they can share with me I would be most obliged and very appreciative.

I really want to know things like:

Are they specially farmed?

Do the parts come from ‘food’ factory pigs?

Where do they live?

Can I meet him and say hi?

If they are specially bred pigs, what happens to the rest of them?

Can I name it Wilbur?

Your post makes me wonder why they make it so hard to find this information out. I guess it just leaves us having to thank the pig from afar. Hmmm .. this world is a strange, miraculous place. PS Whenever I think of pigs I think of Charlotte’s Web, who I had forgotten was called Wilbur until I just googled it haahahaha. Woops. Looks like we were on the same wavelength.
