For the last three years I have volunteered with the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Program here in the city. The organization connects mentorship matches with kids and adults to build constructive, healthy friendships and guidance. I might be the luckiest ‘big’ as I was matched with the funniest, most well adjusted, incredibly special and hilarious ‘little. Her name is Bintu and she has added so much to my life, that I can only hope to mirror in even the slightest. She is fantastically remarkable and a force of nature that makes me feel hopeful for the future of humans at large. Bintu is pretty much the best!
We met today for a group event at the Evergreen Brickworks. All the ‘bigs’ and ‘littles’ had to shop at the farmers market, finding out where all the lush produce was grown. We then used the facility kitchen to make a large shared meal. Bintu and I were in charge of baking the Apple Crisp. We totally nailed it.
In the piles of aprons supplied for us to wear, Bintu specifically chose the one with pigs on it, because she doesn’t eat pork and because, she said, I am going to be ‘part pig’ after my surgery. So we should ‘represent for the pigs’
If this kid is not President of the Universe in the future there is truly no logic to any justice.
