I recently challenged my Facebook friends to supply me with their singular, most loved book of all time. Basically an impossible feat. The thread grew and evolved into a pure golden dialogue of recommendations and cross recommendations from a group of other humans that I know, love and respect. A far better list, in my opinion, than a google top ten search would have amassed. Because now, when I read, I can think about who suggested it and remember them fondly, whether the words on the pages moved me in as equal volumes or not. I can observe that they are in my life and that makes me lucky.
In what might have been a frenzy of excitement, I solemnly promised to read all of the recommendations that I had not already read. I might have also said I would do it in the next year – the truth in the zealousness of that will remain to be seen. But I do promise to read and publish them here; interspersed with all the other books, not via this list, whose pages flew into my hands and tickled my eyes.
